The experts of the former Yugoslavian Army set new tactical and technical requirements for pilot and parachute knives, which mostly coincided with the ideas of Čak Karvan. At that time, "Impa" again accepted the realization of the task. This is how the M-97 pilot-parachute knife was born. This weapon-tool had a folding blade with "Bak's" (Mod.110) "liner-lock" locking (locking with a spring in line with the blade). The convex-concave blade was serrated on the concave part, which made it easier to cut belts made of ballistic cloth or nylon ropes.
There was a type of "skinner" on the calf that made it easier to cut thinner ropes. The tip was rounded, which avoided the possibility of self-injury. The blade could be easily opened and closed with one hand. At the end of the plastic, checkered green scabbard, there was an opening for a cord with a brass sleeve.
The shaft of the blade was also housed in a brass sleeve and the only drawback was that it did not have the possibility of occasional tightening. The length of the blade was 90 mm, the length of the unfolded knife - 210 mm and the weight about 120 grams. The knife successfully passed the rigorous tests of the Technical Test Center (TOC) and was introduced into the standard equipment of pilots and paratroopers. Soon, the Helicopter Unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Serbia decided to use the same knife, only with a dark blue cover. At that time, it was considered that the M-97 should also be offered to the Navy, which was still at the disposal of the former, truncated Yugoslavia. Namely, during service on board, sailors often encounter problems with cutting ropes, on which sometimes their lives and the safety of the vessel depend.
In the Austro-Hungarian Navy, a "sailor's knife" - a folding knife with a wooden scabbard, a 115 mm long steel blade with a rounded tip and a cord, was prescribed as early as 1891. Exactly the same knife was adopted by the Navy of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (M1936) but also by the Navy of the FNRJ and SFRY (M1955 and M1971). In truth, sailors on RM JNA vessels almost never carried this useful tool-weapon. After the creation of the Army of the Republic of Serbia and the River Flotilla as the successors of the former navy, the question of choosing the ideal working knife remained open.
