The war and war destruction covered 54% of the Croatian territory, where 36% of the Croatian population lived. Serbian soldiers occupied 14,760 km2 or 26% of Croatian territory. UNHCR estimates that in 1991 there were around 500,000 exiles and refugees in Croatia, and in addition 150,000 people were in exile abroad.
