The Militia of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was an organ of the Federal Secretariat of Internal Affairs of the socio-political communities of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia responsible for preserving internal order and peace.
The SFRY militia was established during the People's Liberation Struggle in the liberated and semi-liberated areas under the People's Liberation Committees or local commands. During the Second World War, it was known under different names: Partisan Guard, Village Guard, National Guard, etc. From 1944, it was called People's Militia, and from 1966, Militia. The task of the Militia was to directly protect the lives and personal freedom of citizens, social and personal property, maintain public order and peace, public security, prevent disruption of public order, detect criminal acts and their perpetrators, and ensure the execution of other tasks determined by law or regulations passed on the basis of the law of SFRY. The militia was armed and equipped with the necessary technical means and uniforms. The organization of the militia and the responsibility of its workers was aligned with social self-management. Unlike the Armed Forces of the SFRY, whose organization and jurisdiction was on the territory of the SFRY, the militia was organized decentralized, on the territorial principle. The militia was organized into organizational and formational units: departments, stations, platoons, companies, battalions, detachments and brigades. In peacetime, the militia cooperated closely with the bodies and units of the Yugoslav People's Army and the Military Police of the JNA. In case of war, the militia was part of the Territorial Defense of the Armed Forces of the SFRY.
