Different version of regular M89 Helmet used by yugoslavia army, as seen on the photos this model does not have on external shell screws texture is different much rugged. This type of helmet was made in Slovenia and is much more rare than regular m89 helmet.
This is a Prototype helmet produced by Veplas (Velenjska Plastica) in Velenje, SR Slovenia.
Helmet was developed around the same time as the M-89 which would have been adopted by the JNA to replace dated steel M-59 & M-59/85 series of helmets
At first glance this helmet resembles the shape of the M-89 however there is some differences. This helmet is having a wider and higher profile than the M-89, as well as a rounder shape. The helmet sits more angled on the head with a slanted rear, sharing a profile like the early T-91 helmet (Also produced by Veplas) which was worn by the Slovenian Armed Forces after independence. The helmet also has a more thickened reinforced rubber edge which is also something which is shared with the early T-91’s, compared to the M-89 which had a thin rubber rim.
The helmet utilizes the same “riddell” liner system which is synonymous with Yugoslav helmets however unlike the JNA M-89’s which typically used screws fastened through the helmet to the suspension, this uses a similar system to the M-59 series where the liner brackets are fixed to the walls of interior.
The helmet is made of the same material as the M-89 being a two-layer aramid woven fibre embedded in ballistic resin. Unlike the M-89 however which had a smooth shiny finish, intended to be worn with a helmet cover in Hrastov List (Oak Leaf) Pattern. This was finished with a rough texture like “Rautarn”. A red star was also added like on the M-59s. However rather haphazardly according to the positioning.
The Helmet is most likely a contender in the trials for the M-89 which was awarded to the Bosnian company Tehnički Remontni Zavod Hadžići (TRZH) and the Macedonian 11 Oktomvri-Eurokompozit. Its also possible due to the similarities between the 2 helmets and the fact that they were developed by the same company that this is the earliest version or at least influenced the development of the Slovenian T-91.
M89 Helmet was issued to the Ground forces of Yugoslav Peoples Army. Identical design & manufacture as the M89 police version.
