The Thompson is an American submachine gun in 11.43x23mm (.45 ACP) caliber, developed by General John T. Thompson shortly after World War I. It was originally used by criminals, and after that it entered the armament of the US Army.
It has been used in all conflicts from the 1920s to the present day, and during decades of use, the Thompson submachine gun has acquired the status of a legend.
Thomson automatics were used on all fronts of World War II, where they gained legendary status. The Americans introduced a simplified version of the M1 during the war to make it cheaper and easier to manufacture. The Soviet Union received 135,000 Thompson submachine guns as a form of military aid. For them, this machine gun became a status symbol because Russian soldiers valued Western equipment as higher quality.
Thompson was used after the war in many conflicts around the world. After 1948, the JNA received thousands of Thompson M1 submachine guns that were used by border guards, military police and police units. In the early 1990s, the largest amount of these automatic weapons ended up with members of the Serbian Army of Krajina and the VRS, while a smaller amount was used by other warring parties.
