The profession of a submariner has always entailed risk, accidents similar to the one on the Russian submarine of the "Shark" class that happened a few days ago in the Pacific, when 20 people died during the unplanned activation of the fire protection system, also happened in other navies. The most serious accident on Yugoslav submarines occurred in 1963 on submarine 811 when, during the battery charging phase, during which large amounts of hydrogen are released, a spark occurred on one of the fans that expels hydrogen from the submarine. The mixture of hydrogen and air exploded, killing two crew members, and the submarine was repaired at the shipyard in Pula.
- The former 88th submarine flotilla was a respective force, today no landlocked country from the former Yugoslavia has its own submarines. Slovenia and Montenegro judged that they did not need it, Croatia, which has the most potential for such a thing, gave up on NATO's suggestions. I am in regular contact with my colleagues from Croatia, so I can say that they are upset about that, especially because there were also plans to export that technology - says Milan Komar from the "Submarine" Association.
Serbs played a significant role in the development of submarines in the former Yugoslavia, when in 1928, eight decades ago, the first submarines "Hrabri" and "Nebojša" were purchased. The Prime Minister who previously made the decision on the acquisition of submarines was Nikola Pašić, Minister of Defense Stevan Hadžić, Navy Commander Dragutin Prica, not to mention King Aleksandar Karađorđević, without whose consent such a thing would not have been possible - explains Komar, who is working on the preparation of the monograph "88 . flotilla of submarines".
