The military police was formed in the JNA as a separate entity on September 14, 1955, when the general state situation had stabilized, and the partisan methods of maintaining order were no longer sufficient or successful. In the period from 1955 to 2004, the military police was functionally subordinated to the Security Directorate. At the end of 2004, as part of organizational changes, security and military police affairs were separated, when the Department for Military Police Affairs was formed in the General Staff of the Army of Serbia and Montenegro, as an independent entity for planning, organization and management of military police tasks. The department was reformed into the Military Police Directorate in 2006.
