In the Second World War, Yugoslavia received a large amount of PPŠ-41 automatic weapons, but since the well-known events of 1948 occurred, it was decided to go into the own development of a new automatic weapon. PPŠ-41 was taken as the basis, which was modified according to the requirements and possibilities of the Yugoslav industry.
In 1949 a new machine gun was introduced, called M49, at first glance it was a copy of PPŠ-41.
The difference was in a better finish. The M49 had an improved bolt and spring (similar to the Beretta M38A), a better shock absorber.
There was no brake on the PPŠ-41 from the early version, and it was more for "decoration" in later versions. Many examples are known from the Srem front, where fighters died when they accidentally hit the ground or a stone with their gunstock (only STEN was worse). That's how the M49 got a better, safer brake.
The basic material of the M49 machine gun was forged steel, but more attention was paid to the final assembly.
