The M89 pattern was introduced to the Yugoslav people’s army in 1990. The reason for a change from the M87 was the need for a different cut and a darker tone, although both uniforms retained a five color oak leaf design of pattern. The uniform came too late for wide scale adoption with the Yugoslav units, but it saw wide scale use with the Bosnian Serb forces and the Serbian army of Krajina during the war, with the Bosnian Muslim forces acquiring a contingent of the uniforms as well.
The M89 oak leaf pattern is originally introduced to the JNA in 1990 remained in general use by Serb forces until around 1999.
